Definition
A device that can be used by its holder (cardholder) to pay
for goods and services or to withdraw money.
Theory
The device is a plastic card backed by an account holding
funds belonging to the cardholder or offering credit to the
cardholder. From a technology perspective, two types of
payment cards are used: magstripe card and chip cards.
A magnetic stripe card is a type of card capable of stor-
ing data by modifying the magnetism of tiny iron-based
magnetic particles on a band of magnetic material on the
card. The magnetic stripe, sometimes called a magstripe, is
read by physical contact and swiping past a reading head.
A chip card, smart card, or integrated circuit card
(ICC) is any pocket-sized card with embedded inte-
grated circuits which can process data (

IC cards cover both contact and contactless technology.
Dual-interface or hybrid cards implement contactless and
contact interfaces on a single card with some shared stor-
age and processing.
