GRAMMAR: ASKING POLITE QUESTIONS 
 
1.Start with “excuse me” or “pardon me” to get a person’s attention.
Eg: “Excuse me, what time is it?” 
“Pardon me, is there a bathroom over here?” 
“Sorry to bother you, but have you seen James at all?” 
2. Begin a statement with “may” if you need to ask for permission. 
Eg: “May I use your phone for a minute?” 
“May I come in?” 
3. Use “can,” “could,” or “would” when you make a request. 
Eg:“Could you tell me how late you’re open?” 
“You wouldn’t mind picking me up later, would you?” 
4. Say “did you want” or “did you need” to find out what someone prefers. 
Eg:“Did you want some more water?” 
“Did you need some help with that?” 
5. Use “know” or “remember” if you’re not sure whether the person can answer. 
Eg:“Do you know when the meeting starts?” 
“Do you remember what he said last night?” 
“Can you remember where I left my keys?” 
6. Say “please” once in your question. 
Eg:“Could you please tell me where to throw this away?” 
“May I have another cookie, please?” 
 
Task 1. Complete the polite requests with the correct form of the verbs in 
brackets. 
1.Would you mind bringing me a coffee? 
2.Could you lend me your pen? 
3.Would you mind calling a taxi for me? 
4.Could you close the door? 
5.Would you mind getting me a glass of water? 
6.Could you carry these bags for me? 

7.Would you mind putting your phones on slent? 
8.Would you mind helping me with my homework? 
 
Task 3. Match each polite request to a suitable response. 
1.Could you tell me when the train leaves?(C) A.Of course, do you take sugar? 
2.Would you mind closing the door? (D) B.No problem, let me help you. 
3.Could you bring me a coffee ? (A) C.Sure, it leaves at 9:00 a.m 
4.Would you mind helping me with my bags? (B) D.I’d prefer not to, I’m hot 
5.Could you do me a favour? (F) E.Of course, I’ll slow down 
6.Would you mind speaking slowly? (E) F. Yes, what do you need?
