Non-Native Aquatic Species

Topic/Purpose:
To familiarize students with non-native aquatic species present in the St. John’s River
Audience:
High School Age
Objectives: Students will be able to:
1)explain what non-native species are and how they can enter the St. John’s River
2)explain negative effects of exotic species on ecosystems (extinction of native species, decreased biodiversity), human health (toxins), and the economy (decrease in industries)
3)list characteristics of the freshwater jellyfish, blue-green algae, lion fish, cane toad, nutria, red-rim melania, black and white tegu, and Muscovy duck
