Microsoft Word Applied xml a toolkit for Programmers Wiley docBog'liq Ceponkus, Hoodbhoy - Applied XML - Toolkit for ProgrammersAbout “Applied XML”
We wrote this book to provide what most other XML books do not: the nitty-gritty, how-to
details about working with XML.
To be fair, most other authors simply could not write about these things before because
the industry just wasn’t at that point where enough tools were available for one to do any
serious work. Sure, you could make some toy applications that looked pretty or proved a
point, but the support just wasn’t out there for you to create “real applications.” Thus, the
vast majority of books written on XML so far have focused more on the concepts of XML
and on more abstract models, or focused on presenting scenarios based on the promise
of XML.
Even now, the industry isn’t where we’d like it to be, but it has progressed hugely over the
past year—so much so that there is currently enough support out there for developers to
begin creating “real” applications that actually
do
something.
As developers, we’ve spent
a lot
of time pounding our heads against the wall wishing that
the details surrounding XML were more lucid, especially those surrounding the DOM and
XSL. We’ve read tomes upon tomes of information while working on XML and, honestly
(and not meaning to be self-serving), we
wish
we had a book like this when we started
out writing XML applications!
See, we believe very firmly in the induction model of learning; that it is easier to learn by
looking at working examples than by pure concepts alone. For the longest time, those
examples just weren’t out there. By and large, they still aren’t. So we learned the hard
way: by making them ourselves. That’s not necessarily the best thing to do in today’s day
and age.
Thus, our aim in this book is to change all that by giving you the tools you need to begin
creating meaningful solutions using XML. That’s why we titled this book
Applied XML
. We
wrote this book in the hope that you won’t have to go through those frustrating periods of
“how do I do that?” Well okay, this book won’t solve
all
your problems, but it will help
alleviate a lot of them.
