Ceponkus, Hoodbhoy - Applied XML - Toolkit for Programmers

How This Book Is Organized
This book is organized in three major parts, and while it helps to read all of them, we’ve
tried to keep each independent and self-contained.
Part I: XML—A Panoramic View
In Part I we start from simple concepts that you are familiar with and provide you with a
scaffolding of strut-like information so you can climb to the top and see XML in its

- 7 -
entirety. We begin with a very general approach to XML and then move into more of an
industry-specific overview of where XML is and what is happening. We then jump straight
into describing the W3C XML 1.0 standard and provide you with the details you need to
begin creating XML documents.

Chapter 1, XML FAQ.
If you’ve never heard of XML, this is the place to start. In this
chapter we present an overview of XML in a very broad and general context. It is laid
out as a Frequently Asked Questions list, similar to those you find while browsing the
Web.

Chapter 2, Pioneering the Electronic Frontier.
This chapter provides a more industry-
specific overview of XML. It is presented from the perspective of a chief technology
officer or a chief information officer interested in understanding the impact that XML
will have on the industry as a whole and how it can provide both strategic and tactical
benefits to your organization. In it we talk about XML from a systems architecture
perspective and discuss several examples of real applications of XML. We close the
chapter with a roundup of the technical support available for XML today.

Chapter 3, Details, Details.
In this chapter we delve straight into the fundamental
details of creating XML documents. This chapter includes an overview of the official
W3C XML 1.0 specification and covers the basic building blocks of XML documents
and includes many examples. It also includes a primer on creating Document Type
Definitions (DTDs) to help you define a formal structure to your documents and a
discussion on namespaces in XML.
