Movie Assessment Final

Due October 11
Prepare and submit a 5+ page, typed and double-spaced paper on the following topic after completing the activities listed below. Select an individual from one of the following films and perform an "assessment" of their addictive behaviors to the best of your ability. You can do an “assessment” on your own using knowledge you’ve learned from the book (Chapter 18), class, etc. You could also check out various internet sites that have assessment tools for addictions/drug use/etc (such as http://www.danya.com/dapa/ OR http://www.thewatershed.com/Forms/assessment_form.html OR http://www.drug-addiction-support.org ).
Your paper should include:

  1. Quick summary of the movie.

  2. Describe the results of the assessment. Were there any results that surprised you? How obvious or subtle were the behaviors you observed? What was the extent and frequency of drug use using Erich Goode’s list of four types of drug use (Chapter 1)?

  3. Describe what type of addiction (type of drug user – see classifications in Chapter 1) you believe you have observed in this character, based on the prior readings in this course. What state of drug dependence are they in (Chapter 1)? What were some of the factors that contributed to the individual’s addiction (Chapter 2)?

  4. What type of drug is the character abusing? Give an overview of that classification of drug including why it is commonly abused, any unique features, effects from prolonged use, etc. What are some of the unintended drug effects of that particular drug? Discuss the pharmacokinetic factors that influence the drug effects (Chapter 5). Identify which brain areas are most likely to be affected by abusing their drug of choice (Chapter 4)?

  5. Research resources in your community (Seward, Lincoln, etc), what kinds of community treatment might be available for individuals in this situation, if any. What principles characterize effective drug treatment (Chapter 18)? Explain the advantages and disadvantages of several strategies to treat this particular addiction (Chapter 18)? Are there any pharmacological strategies to treat this specific type of addiction? What is the character’s readiness to change?

  6. Discuss implications of such addictive behavior pertinent to community health or for clinicians and educators in community health education.

  7. Personal reflection.

Film Selection Choices:

  • The Basketball Diaries (1995) – The Basketball Diaries tracks the decline of a Catholic high school student from star basketball player to drug addict. Jim (Leonardo DiCaprio) is expelled from school and kicked out of his house for using drugs before a game. Along with his friend Mickey (Mark Wahlberg), they roam the NYC streets in search of heroin. On the streets, Jim hustles, robs, steals, and prostitutes himself to get what he needs.

  • Requiem for a Dream (2000) – This film parallels the lives of four interrelated people living in Brighton Beach, whose recreational drug use soon turns to addiction. The movie follows Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn), a lonely, TV obsessed widow, her son Harry (Jared Leto), his drug dealer buddy Tyrone (Marlon Wayans), and Harry’s girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly). The movie examines the direct and indirect results of drug use, as you watch the addicts on their respective downward spirals.

  • Traffic (2000) – This multiple Oscar winner takes a modern-day look into America’s “War on Drugs” through telling numerous interlinking stories. Robert Wakefield (Michael Douglas) is an American drug czar with a crack cocaine-addicted daughter, while Benicio Del Toro plays a Mexican policeman – these are among the many characters the film focuses on. Warning: Scenes from this movie are somewhat graphic.

  • 21 Grams (2003) - The emotionally and physically charged lives of three people, a college professor (Sean Penn), an ex-con (Benicio Del Toro) and a young mother with a reckless past (Naomi Watts), collide unexpectedly in this gripping suspense thriller.

  • Candy (2006) - A poet (Heath Ledger) falls in love with an art student (Cornish) who gravitates to his bohemian lifestyle -- and his love of heroin. Hooked as much on one another as they are on the drug, their relationship alternates between states of oblivion, self-destruction, and despair.

  • The Bad Lieutenant (2009) - After Katrina, police sergeant Terence McDonagh (Nicolas Cage) rescues a prisoner, hurts his back in the process and earns a promotion to lieutenant plus an addiction to cocaine and painkillers. Six months later, a family is murdered over drugs; Terence runs the investigation. His drug-using prostitute girlfriend, his alcoholic father's dog, run-ins with two old women and a well-connected john, gambling losses, a nervous young witness, and thefts of police property put Terence's job and then his life in danger. He starts seeing things. He wants a big score to get out from under mounting debts, so he joins forces with drug dealers. The murders remain unsolved. A bad lieutenant gets worse.
