While there is considerable variance in the estimated numbers of Internet users, usage of proprietary on-line services is more widely known through posted subscribership. Currently, the combined customer base of America Online, CompuServe and The Microsoft Network, the three largest OSPs, is in excess of 12 million. As for actual usage, AOL's may be fairly typical of the other services—40 million hours per month generated by its over eight million customers. All three OSPs offer proprietary content available only to subscribers, as well as complete access to the World Wide Web.
