Microsoft has a dedicated team that looks at all aspects of Windows 2000 performance. The team tested Chkdsk on a 45-GB volume (95 percent in use) that contained almost 2 million files and 236,500 indexes. Under Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3), Chkdsk took 33 hours to run. Under Windows 2000, Chkdsk took 100 minutes — a 20-fold time reduction.
Caveat All figures were calculated from tests that were run on fabricated test environments. While every effort was made to replicate real world scenarios, the team could not test every variety of hardware our customers have deployed or the many combinations of disk and file configurations that exist. Therefore, use the results as a guide only. It is the responsibility of our customers to apply best practice principles and evaluate the impact of the improvements in their specific environments.
Larger amounts of RAM will increase Chkdsk performance in Windows 2000 and beyond.
