4.3.3 Hybrid of Asymmetric and Symmetric Encryption
However Asymmetric and Symmetric encryption can be combined to produce a fast and efficient system. Symmetric encryption can be used to encrypt all data transmitted to the other system, keeping the process fast and secure. However Asymmetric encryption can be used to exchange secret secure symmetric keys, such that, a system could generate a secure key and then send it to the other system encrypting the key using the public key of the receiving system solving all key exchange problems.
Using this hybrid method allows for all the advantages of both the Symmetric and Asymmetric encryption and solves most of the disadvantages of each method.
The Hybrid method is the method of choice where the calling system will first request the public key of the receiving system and then will generate a private key used for symmetric encryption of the main data, and encrypt this key and send it to the receiving system which will decrypt the key and use it for all further communications. IDEA (International Data Encryption Standard) will be the symmetric encryption implementation of choice and RSA will be used as the asymmetric encryption implementation used.
