In this paper we have described the features provided by the BSCW Shared Workspace system for distributed authoring, and the rationale for many of these features as based on user feedback with previous versions of the software. Our work emphasizes the collaborative nature of document production, focusing on the need to provide awareness information to users on the status of collaboration, the need for flexible access control policies to support alternative methods of coordination etc. Although BSCW is only one application built on top of the Web, we believe that many of our experiences are transferable more generally when extensions to Web standards to support remote publishing, versioning, access control and so on are considered.
In the context of the Web the area of Distributed Authoring is still at an early stage. There is clearly some urgency for standardization in this area, however, following rapid developments in the commercial arena towards remote publishing of HTML documents to a Web server. In our opinion a major issue here is the extent to which standard protocols/architectures can and should provide the flexibility required, and which aspects remain issues for application developers. The answers become less clear when we move from simple document uploading to consideration of policies for version management and access control, as in our experience simple models of check-in/out are rarely sufficient, especially in collaborative document authoring.
