The reader will find frequent reference to the terms “hotspots” and “access points”. A hotspot is a nominated area where a user can expect to receive Wireless LAN access. A hotspot might be a few metres across if it is serving a small room or perhaps 100 metres across if serving a large open space.
One hotspot will be served by one or more access points, typically using a single ESSID4. An access point is the technical equipment which offers IEEE 802.11 connectivity to a mobile terminal.
How a user terminal roams between hotspots is an open question, to which there is no standard answer. Possibilities include the use of Mobile IP5.
