vCalendar is an Internet standard that defines a platform-independent format for easily exchanging appointment information in a consistent manner. Outlook 2000 supports vCalendar so users can exchange important data about events and schedule meetings with anyone else who has a program that supports vCalendar. See the Calendar Enhancements section for more information.
iCalendar is an emerging standard that specifies the formatting and exchange of free/busy information, which is used to search for available times when scheduling a meeting and applies standard formats for meeting requests and responses when sent as e-mail messages. (Meeting requests are invitations to attend a meeting, and responses are returned to indicate whether a request was accepted or rejected.) Outlook 2000 implements the iCalendar standard, so users can share their free/busy information with other Internet users and send and receive meeting requests and responses. As leading calendar and scheduling products adopt the iCalendar standard, calendar and group scheduling applications from multiple vendors will be able to interoperate. See the Calendar Enhancements section for more information.
