Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP) is used to post, distribute and retrieve messages on Internet and intranet news groups or bulletin boards. Outlook 2000 includes a full-featured Internet news reader that is shared with Internet Explorer. This newsgroup reader has many innovative features for managing newsgroups, including filters to block out unsolicited materials and downloading messages for reading and responding to mail offline.
HTML and MHTML Mail
Support for HTML mail lets users send and receive e-mail messages formatted using HTML. HTML is the standard format for information on the Web and can be used to create graphically rich e-mail messages that contain formatted fonts, paragraphs, images and links — all the way to complete Web pages. HTML mail lets users send messages that maintain their formatting when read by HTML mail-compliant clients other than Outlook 2000.
MIME HTML (MHTML) allows users to embed images directly into the e-mail messages or Web pages they send, so the images are sent along with the e-mail message, and no connection to the Internet or an intranet is required to display the linked images.
S/MIME
Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME) help ensure the security of e-mail messages. The implementation of S/MIME in Outlook 2000 includes digital signing, which allows users to verify the identity of the sender and integrity of messages and digital encryption, thereby protecting the messages from being read by anyone except the intended recipient. Outlook 2000 supports up to 128-bit encryption in the U.S. version. Users can thus exchange signed and encrypted mail with any other mail client that supports S/MIME. In addition, the common key and certificate management features in Outlook 2000 are shared with Internet Explorer.
