Sun’s XML Support
Sun has been a champion of XML since its inception. Sun recently announced its
intention to create Java Standard Extensions for XML (a Java-based API) through the
Java Community Process. XML and Java seem to have a natural symbiotic relationship
in that both are intended to be platform independent and portable. Industry pundits often
cite the call “XML gives Java something to do.” After working with both for some time, we
concur! Using XML with Java, you can finally start to make real applications that actually
do something meaningful as opposed to making things just look cool. Using XML+Java
combinations, Web pages have the potential to become full-blown applications and not
just applets.
Sun also has a strong presence on the W3C and is playing a major role in shaping the
XML standards.
Microsoft’s XML Support
Microsoft has taken the most visible lead in supporting XML. Here are some of
Microsoft’s XML friendly actions (or promises to be turned into actions):

Implementing the most comprehensive browser support of XML, Internet Explorer 5
•
Implementing the XML transformation part of XSL, Internet Explorer 5

Using XML as a primary data storage format for all of Microsoft’s Office suit
applications
•
Developing the BizTalk framework for using XML as a medium for exchanging
information throughout all businesses in an effort to enable wide-scale e-commerce
•
Having a seat on the W3C and playing a major role in shaping XML and its related
standards
IBM’s XML Support
IBM has created an entire array of XML applications in the works. We were pretty
impressed with the huge array of things they have going (either that or they’re the only
folks who talk about what they’re up to). Here are some of the things they’ve got going:
