Ceponkus, Hoodbhoy - Applied XML - Toolkit for Programmers

The bottom line is that we think this is way too cool a technology not to succeed, and the
spin-offs of it are nothing less than incredible.
W3C Recommendation: MathML
This is for the academic reader wondering why a technology that started with academia
(the Internet did after all take root in CERN, the international center for theoretical
physics) doesn’t pay as much attention to it anymore. MathML is currently an XML
application that is also an official W3C recommendation. Its intention is to provide a low-
level format for communicating mathematics between machines.
MathML, like every application of XML, consists of an XML vocabulary of tags. These
tags can be used to mark up an equation in terms of its presentation and its semantics
from a computational engine’s perspective. In other words, MathML attempts to capture
the meaning behind equations rather than concentrating on how they are going to look on
the screen, which could otherwise be achieved through different fonts, images, or special
characters.
The core philosophy is that a syntax is needed for describing mathematic functions over
the Web. MathML syntax, though as human legible as any XML application, is not
intended for direct human editing; rather it is to be used by specialized applications such
as equation editors or math packages (for example, Maple).

As much as we may deny it, we need math. The more intricate details there are in the
business world, the greater the desire and need for math becomes. Complex financial
analysis using statistical processing, matrices, differential equations, and everything you
never wanted to know that existed in Calculus III is necessary in today’s business world.
From an engineering perspective, converting a Fast Fourier Transform for a signal
processing application from a simple gif to code is extremely tedious.
Though a computer vocabulary for performing complex math has been important in
academia for years, it is the market that drives development. MathML will be used to
facilitate the use of mathematical and scientific content on the Web. Its other uses include
applications such as computer algebra systems, print typesetting, and voice synthesis.
Currently, there is no inherent browser support of MathML in popular browsers such as
Internet Explorer or Netscape; however, plug-ins are available to both render MathML
data and applications like it. A standalone browser for both HTML and MathML, called the
Amaya browser, is available from the W3C.
Necessity being the mother of invention, this application has succeeded by virtue of
existing.
