Ceponkus, Hoodbhoy - Applied XML - Toolkit for Programmers

Figure 2.15:
Microsoft BizTalk.
BizTalk works by defining a set of schemas or data-structures that are intended to
comprehensively describe standard business procedures, such as purchasing, product
catalogs, promotional campaigns, and invoices, as well as nonstandard standard
business operations (for example, what we do when supplier X can’t deliver because of
manufacturing difficulties?). In doing so, a standard vocabulary for business is set. Our
first reaction is that something like this would be very difficult for any business to accept.
After all, no business wants to be told how to define its standard business operations by a
software vendor. Microsoft’s strategy includes working with many industry moguls to
bolster support for this initiative. Each schema is supposed to be open to periodic
industry design reviews, something that we believe should keep things real.
Here’s an incomplete list of companies that Microsoft is working with to develop the
BizTalk initiative:

Best Buy Company Inc.

Clarus Corp.

Dell Computer Corp.

DataChannel Inc.

Eddie Bauer Inc.

J.D. Edwards & Co.

PeopleSoft Inc.

Procter & Gamble

SAP AG

Sharp Electronics Corp.

WebMethods
Though these are some pretty impressive names, Microsoft’s goal is to get more than
one million businesses online.
Will it work? Cautiously, we say yes, but we should qualify this by stating that we don’t
think it will meet the levels of success that Microsoft feels it will—at least not in the short
run (two to four years). However, we think it’s a great idea and are pretty sure that there
will be a similar, clashing framework proposed by some other company or consortium in
the near future.
Regardless, any new initiative will also base itself heavily on the support of XML. Bottom
line, XML is going to be central to all e-commerce initiatives of the future.
