Ceponkus, Hoodbhoy - Applied XML - Toolkit for Programmers

    Internet Vehicles
For the most part, your XML users will be using a standard Internet browser. However, it
is important to mention that your clientele is not limited to accessing XML solutions
through a browser. The major browsers that have announced XML support include
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Netscape Navigator 5. Here’s more information on each
of the browsers and also information on the “other” kind of Internet vehicles that you can
    use.
    Microsoft Internet Explorer 5
Microsoft took the lead in the browser world in terms of its support of the standards-
based XML. Remarkable as this may seem, at this point, it has the best implementation
of XML in its browser as compared to any other vendor. Internet Explorer 5 includes
complete support of the XML DOM and support of the transformation tools of XSL (
    see
    Part III
of this book). However, it does not fully support the Cascading Stylesheets
standard (CSS), which is thought to be the best way of displaying XML data in a browser.
Also, there are several extra XML support features available in Internet Explorer 5 that,
though not standards-based, are interesting and worth taking a look at.
It should be noted that Internet Explorer 5’s support is not perfect and is not 100 percent
up to standards; however, it is pretty close. For now, we think it’s okay to use it as a
target vehicle, though we don’t suggest enterprise-wide adoption of it until it is completely
    standards compliant.

    Netscape Navigator 5
Netscape’s support of XML comes in its browser engine called Gecko. Strictly standards
speaking, Gecko has the tightest conformance, however, because of the current status of
the standards, that doesn’t mean you can do a lot. Certainly everyone (including us)
believes that Netscape will provide developers with the most standards-compliant
browser in the market. Unfortunately, seeing is believing to us, and we haven’t yet seen
    much beyond hype.
At the time of writing this, Navigator 5’s beta version had not been released while Internet
Explorer 5’s release version had. As a result, we spent more time playing with Internet
Explorer 5 because it is much less likely to change than the pre-pre-prerelease versions
of Navigator 5 to which we had access. We’re not trying to knock Netscape here: They
are a great company and produce the most standards-compliant browsers in the market.
However, until the Navigator 5 preview comes out, there’s not a lot we can write about,
though we’re pretty sure that once Navigator 5 comes out, it will be a great browser and
    have tons of XML support.
