    Figure 2.13:
The non-XML approach to comparative shopping site building.
    The XML-Based Solution Scenario
It would be much easier if everyone were using XML. With XML, you can immediately tell
the structure of the data you are receiving from a client and can deal with it accordingly.
Because standard parsers are easily and freely available, using the DOM, you could
easily navigate and extract information from the results received from each vendor. Once
you store the results as another XML document, then, by associating the document with
a stylesheet (CSS or XSL), you can send back the results to clients. Those clients can
then perform further analysis at their site (for example, sorting or filtering) and decide
which product they want to purchase. Figure 2.14 summarizes this process. Another key
point of this example is that by using XML throughout, you have the ability to include a
much richer set of information. You can provide links to the vendor’s product information
    pages with minimal program adjustment.

    An XML solution approach.
This example is purely minimalist in its approach, and we’ve intentionally left it a little
    vague.
    Parts II

    such applications yourselves.
    Industry Support: XML Vehicles
“The proof of the pudding is in the eating” or so the old saying goes. We’ve talked a lot
about scenarios in which you use XML, but a key issue remains: What is the XML target
platform? That is, how do your users interface with your XML solutions? Succinctly put:
any way computers are used by computers; we do not mean only standard PCs.
For the most part, however, your users will use three classes of vehicles to access your
XML solutions: the Internet, standalone, and “other” ways. The issue of your user’s
vehicle is important, so let’s spend a little time talking about it.
