3. Conclusion. Due to the different nature of software and hardware failures, hardware
reliability metrics are not always appropriate for describing the reliability requirements of complex
software systems. Failures in the operation of software components are more random than constant
phenomena. Usually, they appear only under certain input influences. If the data is not corrupted,
the system can most often continue to function even when it crashes. The paper presents indicators
that are used to determine the reliability and performance of software architectures. For each
reliability indicator, the types of systems to which they can be applied are presented.
The units that can be used to measure these numbers are calendar time, processor time, or
perhaps some discrete unit such as the number of transactions.
Systems that handle transactions typically have varying workloads throughout the day. In
these cases, the unit of measurement is the number of transactions; then the failure rate will be
equal to the number of failed transactions divided by the total number of transactions processed
(operational reliability).
