The Internet: A new information economy?
Abstract
On the World Wide Web, access to services is free, copyright regulations cannot be effectively enforced and the production is mainly voluntary and done as a hobby. Some economists think that this atypical method of operation will finally grow into a more classical framework when the Internet becomes more widely used. This article maintains a different point of view. The model currently under construction on the Internet is a blueprint for tomorrow’s economy, based on intermediation, information products, usage-independent pricing and demand structuring. In such an economy, value is migrating away from the actual production of products and services towards the creation of a demand.
