PALISADES FREE LIBRARY INTERNET POLICY
Internet access is available on selected public computers for all users of the Palisades Free Library. The library’s Internet access is intended primarily as in information resource.
The Internet allows users to connect to networks of resources outside the library. The Palisades Free Library has no control over these resources nor does the library have complete knowledge of what is on the Internet. Information on the Internet may be reliable and current or it may be inaccurate, out-of-date or unavailable at times.
Library patrons use the Internet at their own discretion. The Internet contains material that may be considered controversial or inappropriate. Parents are expected to monitor and supervise their children’s use of the Internet; the library’s staff is not in a position to provide this monitoring and supervision. The library’s staff shall develop such rules and procedures as are necessary to insure the fair and reasonable use of Internet resources.
Staff will assist library users in getting started on the Internet. However, the library cannot guarantee that Internet-trained staff will be available to assist users at all times the library is open. Information and resources on the Internet enhance those already held in the library and often go beyond what is locally available. The library neither monitors nor controls access to, or use of, the Internet.
Failure to use the Internet stations appropriately and responsibly will result in revocation of Internet privileges and/or library use privileges. Users are not permitted to modify the installed hardware or software. Users must obey all federal, state and local laws in the use of the Internet and must respect the legal protections to data and software provided by copyright and license. Users may not misrepresent themselves or use the Library’s computers to make unauthorized entry into any other computer or network. The display of potentially offensive graphics is inappropriate for a public and open environment and is prohibited. The librarian’s discretion and judgment will determine appropriate use. Unacceptable use that is illegal may result in criminal prosecution as well.
Children’s Room: Only children below the sixth grade and their caregivers are permitted to access the Internet on the computers in the Children’s Room. Adults must be accompanied by a child and children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in order to use any Internet terminal.
Time Limits: There is no time limit on computer use if no one is waiting to use the computer. If a patron is waiting, the user who has been on the computers the longest will be given 15 minutes to complete his or her work and then they must let the next patron use the computer.
More than one user may use selected stations at the discretion of library staff.
The library cannot guarantee that patrons who use the Internet will have privacy in the communications and other Internet uses.
REMINDER TO PARENTS
“You are the only individuals who may restrict your own children’s access to library materials and services. Parents who would rather their children did not have access to certain materials should advise their children. The library and its staff are responsible for providing equal access to library materials and services for all library users.”
American Library Association’s Free Access to Libraries for Minors: an Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights.
