Judith A. Tyner. Principles of map design. New York. „The Guilford Press”, 2010

Typeface. A type style or design.
Typography. The style of type or the arrangement or appearance of type on the printed
    page.
Unclassed choropleth. A type of choropleth map for which the data are not placed into cat-
egories. Instead, interval scaling of the data is employed, and each enumeration area is
represented by a separate areal symbol, usually crosshatched lines. Also called “class-
    less choropleth” or “cross-line cholorpleth.”
Unity. A goal of graphic design. The impression that all elements are integrated.
Value. (1) A quantity to be represented. (2) A dimension of color referring to lightness or
    darkness.
Value-by-area cartogram. A cartogram on which the size of the different units is proportional
to some variable, such as population or income, not to actual geographic size.
Verbal scale. A statement in words of the map scale, such as one inch to the mile, or one cen-
    timeter to the kilometer.
Visible spectrum. That part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye.
It extends from violet at the short-wavelength end through indigo, blue, green, yellow,
and orange, to red at the long-wavelength end.
Visual hierarchy. Refers to different levels of emphasis of the elements of a graphic design.

    appendix C. glossary 243
Visual variables of symbols. Graphic characteristics of symbols. These include size, shape,
tonal value, hue, orientation, and pattern.
Visualization. Visualization involves exploration of data and seeing it in different ways. It is
often associated with dynamic visual displays. The goal is insight into the data. Some
animated maps such as “flythroughs” and “flybys” are also called visualizations.
Volume phenomena. Geographical phenomena that extend over areas but can be conceived
of as having a third dimension. The third dimension is a value or quantity. See also
    Statistical surface.
