OFFERED AT WAKE FOREST
Wake Forest University’s department of economics is sponsoring a free Economics Film Series that focuses on films relating to issues in economics, society and politics.
All films are shown at 7 p.m. in Carswell Hall’s Annenberg Forum, Room 111. Each film presentation will include a brief introduction and a post-film question and answer session.
The series began with “Local Hero” Sept. 16.
On Oct. 7 the series will continue with “Metropolis,” ranked one of the top 100 films of all times by the Internet Movie Database. This 1926 classic silent film directed by Fritz Lang depicts a worker revolution in an anti-utopian future where not all is as it seems.
“Gattaca,” a slick futuristic thriller starring Ethan Hawke, shows on Oct. 29. In this Academy Award-nominated film, genetic engineering determines future socio-economic standing by making possible the creation of biologically superior human specimens who grow to positions of power and prestige.

The series concludes on Nov. 19 with “How Green Was My Valley.” Directed by John Ford, this Oscar winner for best picture and best director revolves around a Welsh
coal-mining family torn apart by a harsh economic climate and the resulting challenges they face with unemployment, bad working conditions and potential unionization.
