Before going over the answers, ask the students to check
a) the spelling of their past simple verbs; b) that they
have used
was
and
were
correctly; and c) that they have
spelled the
-ing
form correctly.
MIXED ABILITY
Pens down. Read the complete sentences (i.e. with the
verbs in the correct past simple or continuous form) to the
students first and ask them to identify which verb is in the
past simple and which is in the past continuous before
they do the exercise.

Point out that there is one mistake in each sentence
either with the verb in the past simple or the verb in the

Read the two example sentences. Ask the students to
look at the animals in the table in Exercise 2 on page
94 and elicit a couple more examples as a class. Then,
challenge the students to make at least five more
sentences in pairs.
