Overarching question:
What are the challenges
and benefits of HyFlex
learning for minoritized
college students?
•
Student
phenomenological
interviews
o Open-ended
questions
o Follow-up
questions
•
Documents:
Syllabi
•
I expected students to tell me about
their perception whether HyFlex
benefitted them.
•
I expected them to talk about any
challenges they experienced in
HyFlex.
•
I expected the documents to provide
context and give a sense of the degree
of difficulty involved in taking these
courses and what benefits a student
can infer from reading the syllabus of a
given course.
Subquestion 1: How does
minoritization by race,
gender, language,
disability status affect the
experiences of students
in HyFlex courses?
•
Student
phenomenological
interviews
o Open-ended
questions
o Follow-up
questions
•
Documents:
Syllabi
•
“Mapping” (have
students draw
themselves in a
HyFlex course)
•
I expected students to sometimes
explicitly tell me about their
experience as minoritized students.
•
I expected at other times I would be
asking follow-up questions to unpack
any inferences or references they may
make about being a minoritized
student taking a HyFlex course.
•
I expected to learn about the degree to
which equity was part of the course
design process by reading the syllabi
and any other available documents.
•
I expected the mapping to provide
context about each student and their
social relationship to others in the
course and with the course itself and
how they engage in it.
Subquestion 2: What, if
any, issues of equity do
minoritized students
report from their HyFlex
experience?
•
Student
phenomenological
interviews
o Open-ended
questions
o Follow-up
questions
•
Documents:
Syllabi
•
I expected some students would speak
about equity issues they encountered
but not necessarily be familiar with the
concept of “equity,” so, I paid close
attention during the interviews to
discern when someone’s account may
have touched on issues of equity.
