Equity in Flexible Learning Environments: A Grounded Theory Study of
College Students’ Experiences in HyFlex Courses
A. PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND
The purpose of this research is to understand the experiences of minoritized students in
HyFlex courses in the United States.
The researcher, Manuel Ricardo Flores, is a graduate student in conducting research for a
dissertation at in the Educational Leadership and Social Justice Program at San Francisco
State University). You are being asked to participate in this study because you have taken a
HyFlex course at a college or university in the United States.
B. PROCEDURES
If you agree to participate in this research, the following will occur:
•
You will be asked to respond to a short survey about your demographic
information and to confirm you have completed at least one college level HyFlex
course.
•
You will be interviewed three times for approximately 60 minutes each time
about your experience in HyFlex courses.
•
You will be asked to make a quick drawing or rough sketch of you in a HyFlex
class.
•
The interview will be audio recorded to ensure accuracy in reporting your
statements.
•
The interviews will take place via Zoom call at times convenient for you.
•
The three interviews will be spread out 3–7 days apart depending on your
availability.
•
The researcher may contact you later to clarify your interview answers for
approximately 15 minutes within 1 month of the interview series.
•
Total time commitment will be about 3 hours (180 minutes).
C. RISKS
There is a risk of loss of privacy. However, no names or identities will be used in any
published reports of the research. Only the researcher will have access to the research data.
The researcher will anonymize any information shared in the interviews that may reveal your
identity or school name. You can refuse to answer any questions you are uncomfortable
answering, and you may withdraw completely from the study at any point.
