METALINGUISTIC PECULIARITIES OF GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION IN THE INTERNET LANGUAGE
Abstract. The advent of the internet has revolutionized communication, leading to the emergence of a unique linguistic landscape. This article delves into the metalinguistic peculiarities of graphic communication within the internet language. It explores innovative aspects of this evolving field, presenting a literature review, conclusions, and recommendations based on new research findings. The study investigates how the graphic communication impacts language and its evolution.
Introduction. The internet has transformed the way we communicate, introducing novel forms of expression and language. Within this digital realm, graphic communication, such as emojis, memes, and GIFs, has gained prominence. These graphical elements transcend traditional written language and add layers of meaning to online conversations. This article explores the metalinguistic characteristics of graphic communication on the internet, shedding light on its unique features.
Literature Review. The Rise of Internet Language. The internet has given rise to a distinct language characterized by brevity, informality, and creativity. This digital dialect encompasses various linguistic forms, including text messaging, memes, and graphic symbols [Crystal, 2006]. Graphic communication plays a vital role in this evolving linguistic landscape [Zhang, 2020]. This transformation in linguistic expression reflects the dynamic nature of communication in digital spaces. Internet language is not merely an adaptation of traditional language to a new medium; it represents a fundamental shift in how we communicate [Thurlow, 2004].
Emojis: Beyond Words. Emojis are a prominent form of graphic communication. They serve as non-verbal cues that convey emotions, tone, and context [Baron, 2015]. Emojis are not mere decorations; they are integral components of online discourse. As ideograms and emoticons have evolved into sophisticated emojis, they have become a global language of their own, bridging linguistic and cultural divides [Evans, 2017]. The usage of emojis has become so ingrained in digital communication that some have referred to it as "emoji literacy" [Miller, 2016].
Memes: Visual Language in Action. Internet memes are images or videos accompanied by text, often humorous or satirical, that convey cultural ideas [Shifman, 2014]. They are a visual form of internet folklore and play a crucial role in shaping online communication. Memes can serve as a meta-communicative tool, allowing users to comment on the medium of digital communication itself [Phillips, 2015]. Memetic communication represents a blend of text and image that requires its own literacy and understanding [Milner, 2013].
Visual Communication and Linguistic Multi-modality.The integration of graphic elements into digital communication has led to increased multi-modality in online discourse [Kress and van Leeuwen, 2001]. Users now have access to a wide range of semiotic resources, including images, icons, and symbols, alongside traditional written text. This multi-modality offers opportunities for users to express themselves more richly and flexibly [Jones, 2015]. The fusion of text and images in online spaces has prompted scholars to explore the emergent modes of communication that blend these modalities [Bezemer and Kress, 2008].
