    Chapter 1. Using this Document

    Target audience

The target audience is the Windows Embedded Standard 2009 (Standard 2009) OEM and/or developer.

This document does not apply to separate product families known as Windows Embedded Enterprise and Windows Embedded Server which are for dedicated embedded devices that require custom user interfaces combined with fully functioning Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista. There is a unique embedded product licensing model that distinguishes these products.

The purpose of this document is to help guide the developer through the complete process of evaluating, choosing, designing, installing, developing, debugging, testing, shipping and servicing an effective, reliable and secure Windows Embedded Standard 2009 device.

Standard 2009 is a tools system that componentizes Windows XP Professional including Service Pack 3 in order to create reduced functionality operating system images known as Windows XP Standard runtimes. Prior to Standard 2009, these instances were known as Windows XP Embedded runtimes.

Throughout this document, the term "Windows XP Embedded" refers to all versions of Windows XP Embedded including Standard 2009, unless otherwise stated.

When speaking of the product in general terms, or when referring to Standard 2009 specific features, the term Standard 2009 will be used.

The developer is typically associated with the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) who develops and/or integrates Standard 2009 target hardware. The developer uses Standard 2009 development tools, such as Target Designer, in order to design Windows XP Embedded images that are custom tailored for the OEM hardware.

Please note that for existing Windows XP Embedded developers, there is an optional SP3 update that can be used without the requirement to obtain and install Standard 2009. The differences between upgrading your old Windows XP Embedded tools, and upgrading to Standard 2009, are described further in Chapter 2.

For developers who are not yet using Standard 2009 or the Windows XP Embedded SP3 updates, you should instead refer to the following Resource Kit download for XP Embedded SP2, which is written for users including Windows XP Embedded Update Rollup 1.0:

Microsoft Windows XP Embedded SP2 Resource Kit

The document you are reading is the successor to the above SP2 Resource Kit, introducing Standard 2009 and the Windows XP Embedded SP3 Update.
