     XML FAQ
    Overview
This chapter tries to squeeze the essence of XML into a few pages. It is intended for
readers who are looking for an executive summary of XML—the more technical aspects
are discussed in subsequent chapters. This chapter is for people who don’t have a lot of
time and yet want to understand what XML is and how it fits in the grand scheme of
    things.
    An Executive Summary of XML
XML is hot. You’ve heard the hype, you’ve read the reports, and now you want to
understand for yourself what it is all about. Great! This book’s for you! We’re skeptics by
nature—most engineers are—and words like “killer app” inspire us to come out with guns
blazing to shoot down the idea. So it is with a little embarrassment that we have to admit
that XML is the real deal.
In this chapter, we argue our case in the form of a FAQ (frequently asked question) list,
answering questions that we’ve been asked and that we asked when we first started. By
the time you’ve read this chapter, you should have a pretty good idea of the big picture and
have enough information to hold your own at the next informal discussion about hot
technologies with your friends and colleagues, bosses and underlings, and maybe even—
though this may be stretching it a bit— mom and dad.

    What Is XML?
XML is an acronym that stands for eXtensible Markup Language. It is a method for
describing information so that every computer, and most humans, can understand it.
Think of it as the “Esperanto” of the computer world but with one fundamental difference:
    Everyone can understand it.
