Ceponkus, Hoodbhoy - Applied XML - Toolkit for Programmers

If you’ve never heard of computers,
the Internet or Information Technology, then this
    book is not for you.
    Tools You Will Need
To get the most out of this book, we expect that you will have access to a personal
computer or workstation. We make no pretensions that you will learn everything by reading
alone—we expect you to get your hands dirty working with XML. If you are looking for web-
based solutions, you will find that most of our solutions are tailored for Internet Explorer 5,
though as other browsers become XML compliant, most of our examples should work with
little or no modifications. From a software tools perspective, we’ve tried to include
everything that you will need (and more!) on the CD-ROM.
    What’s on the CD-ROM
Our CD-ROM may well be worth the price of the book itself! We’ve packed it chock full of
utilities that you will find very handy for working with XML, no matter what you intend to
do with XML. Here’s some of the tools we include:

Copies of all our code examples

    Microsoft Internet Explorer 5

    IBM XML parser for Java

Link to the Sun Java parser

    DataChannel Java parser

    XML Spy (an XML editor)

    - 10 -

    Link to Netscape’s Gecko

Links to W3C XML 1.0 Recommendations and supplemental documentation
    Concluding Thoughts
To be honest, we wrote this book for ourselves as college students; we like books that
avoid fluff and get right to the point. We only buy books that help us get things done, not
books that look pretty on a bookshelf. And we expect you probably feel the same way
(why would you bother framing a book that is going to be obsolete in less than two years
anyway?) That XML is big is obvious. That you can use XML in a variety of situations is
equally obvious. We see no point in flogging those dead horses.
    How to
    use
    XML is not
as obvious. That’s what we’ve focused on throughout this book.
Hopefully, this is the kind of information you are looking for. If it is, then welcome aboard
and let’s get on to making XML work for you!
