continuity
Geographic phenomena may be discontinuous or
discrete, that is, found only at cer-
tain
locations, or
continuous, that is, found everywhere within the mapped area.
Point phenomena are by nature discontinuous, but area and volume phenomena may
be either. Barometric pressure and temperature are continuous over the world; forests
are not, although they may be considered continuous over small areas. Discrete phe-
nomena may also be either concentrated or dispersed.
