Waelz is most effective in processing lead smelting slags from dumps of old and 
operating plants. Clinker requires additional processing. 
Electrothermal processing of lead slag is also a reducing sublimation process, in 
which the slag melt reacts with coke on its surface. Slag-distilling ore-thermal 
furnace allows to obtain liquid metal zinc, lead, matte and dump slag in one 
operation. This is an important advantage over fuming and Waelz. 
The disadvantages of electrothermia are the low productivity of the process and 
the extraction of zinc (up to 70%) and the production of zinc of very low quality
requiring complex additional refining. 
Currently, the electric furnace processing of lead production slags has limited 
application.
