Policy Recommendation 1: Systemwide Standard HyFlex Definition. To ensure consistent quality in the HyFlex
experiences for California community college students, it is critical the CCC adopt a policy establishing a common
definition for what constitutes HyFlex teaching and learning across the entire system. Adopting this policy is the
first step educational leaders and practitioners can take to ensure all stakeholders are clear about what HyFlex
teaching and learning is and what it is not. Establishing a common definition for the CCC system will help
teachers, students, and administrators have a clear understanding of what the expectations are for everyone
participating in this type of modality.
Policy Recommendation 2: Matriculation HyFlex Codes. This type of policy will allow college students in the CCC
system to know at the moment they register for a course if they are signing up for a HyFlex course and will help
them calibrate their expectations accordingly. In addition to helping ensure consistent experiences of good
quality, this policy will help educational leaders, practitioners, and researchers gather data to evaluate how well
HyFlex teaching and learning is serving California community college students. Establishing a common
matriculation code for HyFlex will allow institutions to measure the effectiveness of their HyFlex offerings and
compare them against their local face-to-face and online data and against statewide data for HyFlex.
Policy Recommendation 3: Faculty Professional Development. Faculty play a critical role in any learning
environment, and HyFlex is not the exception. The faculty role is essential for the success of a quality HyFlex
program. A statewide policy mandating HyFlex-specific professional development for faculty would help
institutions ensure their HyFlex courses and programs are of high quality and rooted in best practices of equity
and effective integration of technology and pedagogy. Although individual districts and colleges should have the
ability determine the specific offerings available to their faculty, a statewide policy for HyFlex-specific
professional development for faculty should encompass requirements for technology and pedagogy integration,
HyFlex course design, and critical consciousness.
