Appendix F: Recommendations for Students New to HyFlex Learning
Being a successful student in HyFlex courses requires students to be aware that with enhanced options
come increased responsibilities. Students who act agentively stand poised to reap the benefits of a well-
design HyFlex environment. In addition to choosing
a mode of participation, students in HyFlex must be
proactive about staying on top of their responsibilities and manage their time effectively. Whenever
possible, students should take advantage of any and all wrap around services
the institution provides as
part of the HyFlex learning ecosystem. The following recommendations are based on the accounts of the
participants in this study:
•
Realize you have a new role as a HyFlex student and thrive in that new role.
•
Use available wrap around student services.
•
Develop your digital literacy skills.
•
Become internet and media savvy.
•
Build positive relationships with your instructor and peers; they will help you learn more.
•
Be kind to your peers, especially to those you do not interact with in person.
•
Use a calendar to help manage your time. Avoid procrastination and stay on top of deadlines
and due dates.
•
Give grace to your teachers when they make errors. It is quite possible that this is also their first
HyFlex class.
•
Try to engage with students in all the available paths, not just with those
who chose the same
mode of attendance as you.
•
Advocate for yourself. If you need help or are
having problems, speak up in the available
communication channels (in class, online
in synchronous class, through the LMS, email or IM;
use whatever is provided). Do not suffer in silence.
•
Take advantage of the choice of attendance modes even if you primarily participate in one
mode. Each mode has distinct differences and some advantage over the others.
