The cartographer’s assignment for Plate 12.1 was to make a map to illustrate an
article on poverty in the United States for a popular magazine. The magazine allows
color. Plate 12.1 is based on the default colors that are found in some spreadsheet and
mapping software programs.

. The colors have no logic; they are simply the additive and subtractive
primaries. With this scheme, the lowest value states are red, which would normally
be used for high values, and the high-value states are magenta, which can also be
used for high.
