goode’s homolosIne
Classification
Pseudocylindrical; composite; equal area.
Graticule
Meridians: in interrupted form, six straight central meridians; kink in merid-
ians at 40°44
′N and S. Parallels: straight parallel lines perpendicular to the
central meridians. Poles are points.
Scale
True along every latitude between 40°44
′ N and S and along central merid-
ian between 40°N and S.
Distortion
Same as sinusoidal between 40°44
′N and S; same as Mollweide beyond this
range.
Usage
Almost always presented in interrupted form; numerous world maps in
atlases and textbooks.
Other
Composite of Mollweide (homolographic) and sinusoidal.
RoBInson
Classification
Pseudocylindrical; neither equal area nor conformal.
Graticule
Meridians: central meridian is a straight line; others resemble elliptical arcs.
Parallels: straight, parallel lines; equally spaced between 38°N and S; spac-
ing decreases beyond these limits.
Scale
True along 38°N and S; constant along any given latitude.
Distortion
Low within 45° of the central meridian and along the equator; no point is
free of distortion.
Usage
Thematic world maps.
lAmBeRt confoRmAl conIc
Classification
Conic; conformal.

appendix a. Commonly Used Projections 227
Graticule
Meridians: equally spaced, straight lines converging at a common point (one
of the poles). Parallels: unequally spaced, concentric circle arcs centered on
the pole of convergence.
Scale
True along one or two chosen standard parallels; constant along any given
parallel.
Distortion
Free of distance distortion along the one or two standard parallels.
Usage
Midlatitude regions of E–W extent.
Other
Cannot show entire earth.
