For any given set of data, as we have seen throughout this book, there are many pos-
sible cartographic representations. The representations vary because of the audience,
format, purpose, the symbols chosen, the data manipulation and categorization, the
software used, and the map maker’s aesthetic sense. Representations also vary based
on standards and requirements of agencies and companies that publish maps.

book an appreciation of the
importance of design as a decision-making process and that he or she will not take
that process lightly and simply select default options.
