the length of each leg of the journey. The readers of such books like to follow along
on the trip and they want to know how far the traveler went each day and where she
stopped. Although Suzanne could put a table at the back of the book listing stops and
distances, it is still useful to be able to see the entire route at a glance. Not all of the
states are shown on the before map; this isn’t a real necessity since most of the target
audience will be familiar with the United States.

shown and numbered and a legend listing the towns is provided. The starting and
ending points are labeled on the map; this also indicates that the trip was from west

. The “before” map displays the values in an appropriate manner and
wouldn’t mislead the reader. However, the north arrow is overwhelming, and of
course not appropriate. The shades of gray are quite close, especially for the 5–6.4
and 6.5–7.9 categories. Color is permitted in the newspaper, so having a color map

. The redone map is in shades of red, which attract the
eye and permit a greater range by adding saturation as well as lightness; this allows
the lowest value states to have a tint. The unnecessary north arrow has been removed
and an explanatory title has been added to the legend. Although one would hope
that readers of the business section would have a knowledge of U.S. geography and
know the names and locations of the states, many studies have found that for a large
