MedARKS and Windows 2000©: Solutions for display, memory and mouse problems

The default properties for DOS tasks in Windows 2000© are different from other versions of Windows. As a result, when you first start MedARKS in Windows 2000©, the program often exhibits problems with the screen display, with memory usage and/or with mouse function. The sections below should help you create a desktop icon and then edit the DOS task properties to allow MedARKS to function with the same characteristics as with other versions of Windows.

    Creating a Desktop Icon:

    1. Right click on a blank area of the Windows 2000© desktop and a drop-down menu should appear. ChooseNew -> Shortcut from the menu

    2. In the Create Shortcut window that has now appeared, click on the Browse button to get a standard Windows tree directory. Locate the drive with the MedARKS program and click on the plus sign to the left of the drive. Next, locate the NEWMED folder and click on the plus sign to the left of the folder to show the MedARKS folder. Finally, click on the plus sign to the left of the MedARKS folder, locate and click on the FMedARKS.BAT file in the MedARKS folder and click on the OK button to close the browse window and save this information.

    3. Click on the Next > button of the Create Shortcut window, type MedARKS 5 into the field under Type a name for this shortcut: and click on the Finish button.

You should now have a MedARKS icon on the Windows 2000© desktop. With most versions of Windows you would be just about ready to run MedARKS, but Windows 2000© has DOS task defaults that require more extensive editing to get the program to run smoothly. If you have just installed MedARKS from the installation and upgrade CD-ROM, you should now double-click on the MedARKS icon to get the program and data files to finish the installation process. You will probably get a series of warning messages as MedARKS attempts to run with the DOS defaults assigned by Windows 2000©; ignore these messages and press the ESC key until you are able to exit from the MedARKS program and continue with the instructions below. If you upgraded your computer to the Windows 2000©operating system and had a working version of MedARKS on the computer, then you can continue directly with the instructions below.

Insufficient Memory to access ARKS3 data files Problem: MedARKS reports that it does not have sufficient extended memory to access ARKS3 data files.

Cause: Windows 2000© is not allocating enough extended memory to the DOS task window in which MedARKS is running.

Solution: The properties of the desktop icon need to be adjusted to assign more extended memory to the DOS task window in which MedARKS will run. The following steps should resolve the problem.

    1. Right click on the MedARKS desktop icon and a drop-down menu should appear. Choose Properties from the menu and the icon properties window will open.

    2. If a Memory tab is present on the Properties window, go directly to step 6. Otherwise, click on the Programtab of the Properties window.

    3. Click on the Program field and use the right arrow key to go to the end of the existing text. Use the backspace key to erase the fmedarks.bat at the end of the text, enter smedarks.exe at the end of the field, click on the Apply button and then the Ok button.

    4. Right click on the MedARKS desktop icon, choose Properties from the drop-down menu and reopen the icon properties window. A Memory tab should now be present.

    5. Click on the Program field and use the right arrow key to go to the end of the existing text. Use the backspace key to erase the smedarks.exe at the end of the text, enter fmedarks.bat at the end of the field, and click on the Apply button.

    6. Click on the Memory tab and set the Extended Memory to 12288 Kb. Click on the Apply button and then theOk button.

This should resolve memory issues when running MedARKS as a DOS task under Windows 2000©.

Screen Display Problem: The MedARKS program uses only the top half of the window or monitor screen for display.

Cause: MedARKS is written to display on a 25-line screen. The usual default for DOS tasks in Windows 2000© is a 50-line screen, so MedARKS only uses the top half of the DOS window.

    Solution:

    1. Right click on the MedARKS icon on the desktop and choose the Properties option off the dropdown menu

    2. Select the Screen tab on the Properties window

    3. Select the Full Screen option and click on the OK button at the bottom to save the property settings

    4. Start the MedARKS program and when the opening menu screen is displayed, hold down the ALT key and press the Enter key.

    5. The MedARKS program should now be displayed in a window on the monitor

    6. Right click on the bar at the top of the MedARKS window and choose the Properties option off the dropdown menu

    7. Select the Layout tab and change the height for both the Screen Buffer Size and the Window Size to 25

    8. Click on the OK button at the bottom to save the property settings.

    9. Quit the MedARKS program and then restart. MedARKS should now be displayed correctly in full size window on the monitor.

To get to Windows from inside MedARKS (without exiting MedARKS) either press the Windows key on your keyboard or press the ALT+TAB key combination. Don't forget that MedARKS will still be running in the background. To get back to the MedARKS program, just click on the appropriate button on the task bar.
