    SOHO Bus and Device Requirements

This section defines specific requirements for SOHO servers for USB and other buses.

200 USB host controller on SOHO system can wake the system

    Required

If present in the system, a USB host controller must support wake-up capabilities from at least one of the S1, S2, or S3 system sleep states.

201 SOHO system does not include ISA expansion devices

    Recommended

It is strongly recommended (rather than required) that no ISA expansion devices be included in a SOHO server system.

The exemptions, design intent, and benefits related to excluding ISA devices are defined in the “System does not include ISA expansion devices” requirement in Chapter 3, “Basic Bus and Device Requirements.”

202 Parallel port on SOHO system meets requirements for bus and device classes

    Required

In addition to the requirements and recommendations for parallel port capabilities defined for Basic server systems in Chapter 3 of this guide, the parallel port on a SOHO system must support the ECP protocol as defined by IEEE 1284‑1994 specification. This capability allows connections with higher-speed parallel peripherals.

    SOHO Storage Device Requirements

This section defines specific storage requirements for SOHO server systems.

203 SOHO hard drives meet minimum performance requirements

    Required

Enhanced IDE (EIDE) is acceptable but not recommended. The preferred minimum performance requirement is 20 to 40 MB per second parallel SCSI interface.

SOHO Fibre Channel Controllers and Peripherals

This section presents SOHO requirements for Windows NT–compatible adapters, peripherals and any devices that use Fibre Channel controller.

204 SOHO system includes Fibre Channel controller and peripherals

    Optional

This technology is optional (rather than recommended) for SOHO servers.

If implemented on a server system, to use the native support in Windows NT, Fibre Channel must use the X3T11 Private Loop Direct Attach (PLDA) profile as the storage base. The Physical Layers implementation must comply with Fibre Channel Physical (FCPH) Revision 4.3 or higher. For more information, see the web site for the Fibre Channel Association, which is available at http://www.amdahl.com/ext/CARP/FCA/FCA.html.

    SOHO Tape Drives

This section provides specific additional requirements for tape hardware for SOHO server systems. If a tape drive is provided in a SOHO server system, it must comply with the additional requirements in this section.

205 Single-tape device for SOHO system meets minimum capacity requirements

    4 GB required

Minimum storage capacity is required for any tape device designed for a compliant system. Minimum capacity required is based on targeted system type.

SOHO Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability Requirements

This section provides design guidelines for fault-tolerance features and capabilities.

206 SOHO system includes intelligent RAID controller with adequate storage capacity

    Optional

This capability is optional for a SOHO server system, rather than recommended.

207 RAID subsystem for SOHO server supports automatic replacement of failed drive

    Recommended

This capability is recommended for a SOHO server system, rather than required. The RAID subsystem should provide automatic replacement of a failed drive by a standby disk and should rebuild lost data without interfering with system operations.
    Chapter 9

    Enterprise Server Requirements

The requirements defined in this chapter for systems designed as Enterprise servers supersede equivalent Basic server requirements as defined in Part 1 of this guide.

Note: It is recognized that OEMs supply systems with specific feature requirements to corporations, which can include providing servers that do not include any processors pre-installed before shipping. However, for testing purposes, the system must include the minimum required components.
