    Enterprise System Microprocessor Requirements

This section summarizes processor requirements for Enterprise server systems.

208 System processor capabilities meet minimum requirements

    200 MHz; 512K L2 cache required

The requirements for Enterprise server systems differ from the Basic server requirement in that Pentium II processors may not be used in this class of server and a 512K L2 cache is required.

209 Multiprocessor-capable Enterprise systems comply with symmetric multiprocessor support specifications and meet minimum expansion requirements

4 processor support required, at a minimum

An Enterprise server must support at least four processors. This requirement is defined for Enterprise servers in addition to the requirements for multiprocessor capabilities as defined in the “Multiprocessor-capable systems comply with symmetric multiprocessor support specifications and meet minimum expansion requirements” item in Chapter 2, “Basic System Component Requirements.”

    Enterprise System Memory Requirements

This section defines minimum memory requirements for Enterprise server systems.

210 Enterprise system memory capacity meets minimum requirements

    2 GB required

This requirement defines minimum RAM expansion. For multiprocessor systems, 256 MB is required for each multiprocessor. All memory visible to the operating system as system memory must be cacheable.

    Enterprise Storage Device Requirements

This section defines specific requirements for storage on Enterprise server systems.

211 Enterprise system hard drives meet minimum performance requirements

    Required

The minimum performance requirement for an Enterprise server is 40 to 80 MB per second parallel SCSI interface or 100 MB per second, with a Fibre Channel serial interface.

    Enterprise Tape Drives

This section provides specific additional requirements for tape hardware for Enterprise server systems. If a tape drive is provided in an Enterprise server system, it must comply with the additional requirements in this section.

212 Single-tape device for Enterprise server meets minimum capacity requirements

    8 GB required

For an Enterprise server, the minimum storage capacity is 8 GB.

Enterprise Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability Requirements

This section defines specific requirements for Enterprise server systems for reliability and availability.

    Enterprise Power Supply and Ventilation

This section defines the guaranteed power requirements for Enterprise servers.

213 Enterprise system supports replacement of power supplies

    Required

Replacement capabilities are required for Enterprise servers.

Recommended: Hot-swapping capabilities for power supply replacement and power supply redundancy.

214 Enterprise system supports replacement of fans

    Recommended

For highest reliability, it is recommended that hot swappable fans be implemented to maximize server up time.

    Enterprise Fault-Tolerant Hardware

This section provides design guidelines for fault-tolerance features and capabilities.

215 Enterprise system includes intelligent RAID controller with adequate storage capacity

    Required

This capability is required for Enterprise servers.

216 Enterprise system supports at least one of RAID 1, 5, or 1/0

    Required

RAID support is required for an Enterprise system. RAID 1 and RAID 1/0 are recommended. RAID 5 is also acceptable. RAID 0 (for enhanced performance but no added reliability) is optional.

217 RAID subsystem for Enterprise server supports manual replacement of failed drive

    Required

The RAID subsystem on an Enterprise server must provide for manual replacement of a failed drive without shutting down the system. The subsystem must also rebuild lost data without interfering with system operations.

    Appendix A

    Clustering Hardware

This appendix defines the additional requirements for systems used in a clustered configuration.
