Ticked: get up early every day, go swimming, leave his phone
at home, share a bedroom, help with the cleaning

Read the examples as a class. Remind students that we
    use
    don’t have to
    to say that something isn’t necessary;
    they should use
    can’t
to say if he isn’t allowed to do
something. Put the students into pairs and ask them to
write at least two more pairs of sentences.
    MIXED ABILITY
Ask weaker students to write three more sentences with
    He has to
    or
    He doesn’t have to
    only.

    Possible answers
He has to go swimming, but he doesn’t have to go to the
disco. He can stay in his room if he likes.
He can’t bring his mobile phone. He has to leave it at home.
He has to share a bedroom. He can’t sleep in his own room.
He doesn’t have to do any school work, but he can if he wants
    to.

Point out there is one mistake with
    have to
    in each of the
sentences, and that although there are different ways of
correcting some of the sentences, they should correct
    them all with
have to / don’t have to.
    You may also wish
to point out that in number 4 they’ll need to change
    nothing
    .
