Role of the Researcher
As the primary researcher, I have chosen this study for both personal and professional
reasons. Professionally, I am currently the instructional technologist at Skyline College in the
San Mateo County Community College District. Due to my role, I am deeply embedded in all
matters pertaining to instructional design and technology, including distance education among
several other domains. Although I have never taken nor taught a HyFlex course, I have a deep
interest in the subject.
I consider myself a lifelong learner and have a natural curiosity for the subject. I am also
a first-generation college student who transferred from the community college system into a
bachelor’s program in the CSU system and then went on to a master’s program at private
university and am now back at the CSU system in the university where the term HyFlex was
coined. Naturally, I have a bias toward doing work that helps improve the experiences of
students with backgrounds similar to mine.
I did not conduct this research at a specific site. Instead, I casted a wide net to outreach
nationally via mailing list through a gatekeeper (my dissertation committee chair) and though
social media sites like LinkedIn. I did not have any relationships with the participants or any
specific site other than my relationship with my dissertation committee members. Although it is
impossible to completely remove all bias from this research study, I begin by declaring my role
and positionality and will make every effort to operate fairly and ethically throughout the entire
process of this study.

Summary
In Chapter 3, I explained my rationale for my methodological decisions and every aspect
of the chosen research design. I provided an overview of participant characteristics using a data
table and a brief of participant demographics and their qualifications for participation in this
study. I discussed my role as researcher and as main instrument for data collection and analysis. I
discussed the methodological choices I made to ensure the credibility and reliability of the study
as I explored the lived experiences of the participants. Additionally, I discussed how this study is
significant in various ways; first, it contributes to the field by providing a set of
recommendations or guidelines for practitioners highlighting the need to pay increased attention
to equity issues concerning the needs of minoritized students. Second, it contributes to solving
the dearth of empirical literature on the topic of student equity in HyFlex learning environments.
And finally, the study gives voice to minoritized participants about their experiences in and out
of HyFlex. In doing so, this study opens that line of inquiry and invites further research to
investigate this phenomenon from the point of view of students with similar backgrounds to the
