The Need for Reliable Internet Connectivity

Not surprisingly, various participants in the
study mentioned the need
for reliable, fast internet as an essential factor for participating and
succeeding in HyFlex if they chose the online option of participation and it contained
synchronous activities. In this subgroup, Josephine was the participant who expressed being the
most affected by unreliable internet. Because her internet at home was sometimes unreliable, we
scheduled our interviews at times when she would be on campus so she could take advantage of
the fast internet. Although we usually met at times that would be considered off-peak, she had to
move around during our interviews either because the internet was too slow in the area where she
was or because she had to vacate the study room she had reserved because the school only
allowed 30-minute study room reservations. Because we were meeting on Zoom, we did have to
interrupt and restart our interviews on some occasions. When asked what aspects of HyFlex she
would improve if she had
the ability to make HyFlex better, Josephine responded:

I don’t know, maybe . . . that’s hard . . . I think it would . . . I think it’s like the internet
connection stuff. That’s what’s frustrating to me . . . mostly . . . it has less to do with like,
the actual like . . . way all the courses are laid out, and more to do with like . . . the
connectivity part of it, because you saw . . . like having to . . . like, walk outside when I
need it [internet connectivity]. Like I would like to have been outside, but now I’m
having to walk inside of the building to get a better connection. Like that’s kind of
frustrating.

The need for reliable internet connectivity is difficult to address because of the number of
variables involved. Educational institutions depend on internet service providers for internet
connectivity solutions. Colleges and universities can take steps to improve connectivity on their
campuses, but there is little they can currently do to improve internet service in all the places
from where students join their courses. Regarding reliable internet access at this point, it seems
the best thing colleges and universities can do is to focus on improving internet connectivity on
campus. Another way is to create a suite of services around the HyFlex experience, including
loaner programs for students to check out Wi-Fi hot spots and devices and to explore community
partnerships to create internet connectivity hubs in the community for students who opt to attend
online without coming to campus.
