professional development for faculty should encompass requirements for technology and
pedagogy integration,
HyFlex course design, and critical consciousness. A policy of this type
will ensure the CCC is equipped with qualified instructors who
can use and implement
technology effectively to augment instructional and assessment methods and best practices. This
kind of policy would require training teachers to design and deliver HyFlex courses of high
quality well-grounded on the four guiding principles of HyFlex: learner choice, equivalency,
reusability, and accessibility. The critical consciousness component requirement of this
policy
would augment course quality by ensuring faculty are being mindful to use decolonizing
perspectives in their course design and curriculum by avoiding
propagating White supremacy
tacit norms that favor some students at the expense of minoritized learners.
Policy Recommendation 4: HyFlex Student Support and Services. Other key
elements in every learning environment are the support services that envelop the educational
experience. Creating an effective HyFlex learning environment requires that students have access
to an equivalent suite of services online to what they would find on campus.
A statewide policy
requiring parity of student supports and services would ensure students online and onsite receive
equivalent services specific to HyFlex in addition to the general suite
of student services
typically offered at the CCCs. In tandem with providing technology and Wi-Fi loan programs,
this policy should require institutions to offer supports that will equip HyFlex students with the
necessary internet and digital literacy skills to succeed in HyFlex. This
entire ecosystem of
support and services should be available to students online and onsite.
