Analytical methods are traditionally used to describe simple systems,
which consist in sequentially dividing the system into components and building
models of more and more simple elements. It is basically a method of
mathematical modeling, in which models are described in the form of equations,
and predictions of system behavior are based on their solutions.
Modern technical systems (for example, the aforementioned port,
engineering structures, instrument complexes, vehicles, etc.) are approaching the
level of complexity when their observed behavior and properties cannot be
reduced to a simple sum of the properties of individual components. When
components are combined into a system, qualitatively new properties appear that
cannot be determined by analyzing the properties of the components.
In the case of a port terminal, small deviations in the operation of cranes,
small changes or disturbances in the schedule of train movements, deviations in
the level of loading and the arrival schedule of ships can lead to qualitatively
new behavior. port as a system ie congestion. The formation of jams has an
adverse effect on the operating modes of the components, which can lead to
serious accidents, etc. It is not possible to fully obtain the blocking condition, for
example, from an individual analysis of the characteristics of a single tap.

We call such systems complex when the main properties can be lost when
the components are separated, and qualitatively new properties appear when the
components are added. A complex system model based on the principles of
analysis is inevitably inadequate for the studied system, because when the
system is divided into its components, its qualitative properties are lost.
