The Archibald Family
John Archibald of Londonderry, Ireland (1623-1751) was
the father of six sons; four sons moved to Truro from East Derry,
New Hampshire in 1760. John was buried in the Forest Hill
Cemetery, having died Aug. 10, 1751. His father, John, was
buried in Londonderry, N.H. in 1728. The will of the grandfather
of the “Four Archibald Brothers” is in Londonderry, N.H.
The four brothers, David, Samuel, James, Thomas, and
three sisters, Elizabeth (Mrs. Matthew Taylor), Eleanor (Mrs.
William Fisher) and Martha (Mrs. Samson Moore) came to Truro in
1760. Two brothers Robert and John stayed in New Hampshire.

Matthew T. and Adams came here in 1824, he died here in 1861.

John Archibald was a grantee of forest lands in Upper
Musquodoboit for his two sons, Samuel Burke Archibald and William
Putnam Archibald. These lands were 30 miles from Truro and 70
miles from Halifax. Two brothers, near the end of their teens,
in love with country life, left their home in Truro and came to
Upper Musquodoboit. Here they cleared the land and built a log
cabin. (Owned by Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Flemming) 1980.

Public roads there were none; only blazed paths between
the houses of the settlers. This John Archibald was known as
"Major John" and his brother Matthew was called "Matthew, the
tanner"; they never lived in Musquodoboit but took up land for
their sons.
Adams Archibald
1. Adams, (the 3rd son of Matthew & Janet Fisher Archibald) was
born in Truro April 18, 1777.
He md. Hannah (4th dau. of Robert and Hannah (Blair)
Archibald on Jan. 22, 1802. They settled in Middle Musquodoboit
where he had taken a grant of 180 acres on March 2, 1811, now the
farm of Douglas Benvie 1980. He was one of the first to build a
two-storey house here, it was situated on the old road further up
the hill.
His wife Hannah died June 10, 1854 age 75 yrs. They are both
buried in the Pioneer Cemetery beside the church. Adams and
Hannah had 2 daus.

George built the present house in which Adams died in 1857. The
Doug Benvie Property 1980.
When George became old he sold the farm to Samuel and
Charles McCurdy. Later they sold it to Gus Chisholm, he to
Foster Dixon McCurdy. After his death it was sold to E.D.T. Snow
who sold it to Norman Benvie, who left it to his son Douglas.

John (3rd son of David and Elizabeth Elliott Archibald) was born
in Londonderry, Ireland, August 18, 1747. He came with the rest
of the family, to New England about 1759, and to Truro December
13, 1762. He was one of the grantees of Truro Township. He
lived, while in Truro, on his house lot in the Village; later it
was known as the Hiram Hyde lot. About 1790 he moved to
Musquodoboit and settled on the farm later called the John Tupper
farm, now owned by Carl Grant where Ronald Stewart resides,
1980. John md. Alice (sister of Hugh Moore Sr. of Truro) on June
2, 1768. They had 4 sons, 6 daus.
John and Alice both died in Musquodoboit and are buried in the
Pioneer Cemetery although graves are unmarked.
