They adopted William Prescott Archibald, 201-7 (son of Alexander

and Catherine Archibald) their nephew when he was six years old.

11-10 Margaret (5th dau. of William & Susan Putnam Archibald) md.

Colin McLennan of Pictou on Feb. 22, 1853. They had 3 sons & 2

daus. They moved to the States, Mr. McLennon died there January

27, 1868. She returned to Truro and md. John Smith on Aug. 11,

1870, no record.

John Bates


The Bates originally came from Holland and settled at Hammonds

Plains near Halifax. They came to Halifax after the American

Revolution (1775-1783).

Ehakim Bates married and had a family. He was buried in Halifax

in the cemetery by the old Dutch Church; his name can still be

read on his grave stone.

1. John V. Bates b 1792 –d Oct 27, 1870, son of Ehakim moved

from Hammonds Plains to Halifax as a young man, where he learned

the carpenter trade. About 1822 John moved to Musquodoboit, took

up part of the Mark Hodgson grant in Glenmore, cleared his farm

and built himself a home place where Mrs. Isaac Holman, a great

grand-daughter, now resides.

About the time he moved to Musquodoboit he md. Mary R. Layton

(dau. of John Layton). She was born in 1803 and died Sept. 16,

1881 age 78 yrs.

Stewiacke where he was a farmer and carpenter. They had 2 sons

Apparently they moved from Amherst to Truro. Jane’s 2nd husband

she was his 2nd wife. She died Dec 1, 1908, they had 3 sons

Harry, Matthew, Arthur and 1 dau., Libbie who died young. Thomas

built the house where Mr. Hudoffsky now lives. (1980)
87-1 Harry md. Emma (dau. of Francis Guild) and inherited the

farm which he afterwards sold and purchased the Jonathan Layton

property now owned by George Fulton. The present house was built

by Henry Murphy, then was occupied by Albert Wright, C.H.

Blackador and then Harry Guild. Later, Harry built the house

across the road now owned by Gerald Cavicci[sic], where he and

his wife both died. They are both buried in Hillside cemetery.

"M. Harry Guild 1868-1939, wife Emma 1874-1944" inscription on

the stone. They had one dau. Ethel (Mrs. Norman Esty), one son

William.

13-12 Annie (8th dau. of John & Mary Bates) md. John H. Taylor of

Chaswood in Dec. 1863. They lived where the late George Taylor

resided, now the home of Austin Day, 1980. He ran the home farm

for 50 years, was a Justice of the Peace for 40 years and also

Warden of Halifax municipality until his death in 1908. Anne

died Oct. 15, 1880 age 36 years. Son Albert D. 1872-1928. After

the death of his wife John H. Taylor md. Ellen Bell. John and

Annie had 4 sons & 1 dau.

Henry Behrendt


1. Henry Behrendt was born in Mecklenburg ­ Strelitz,

Germany, which is on the Baltic Sea bordering on Hamburg and

Lubech. He was born in 1830. And died on Sept. 29, 1905, age 75

yrs. 9 mos.

When quite young he enlisted in the English army at the time of

the Crimean War, but just before arriving at the scene of action

Peace was declared. Not wishing to return to his native land he,

with several others, came to Halifax. In 1857 Henry met and

married Elizabeth Hollingsworth in Halifax. Elizabeth was the

daughter of John and Letitia Hollingsworth of Musquodoboit

South. They moved to Musquodoboit South on Oct. 6, 1857 where he

bought a house and a few acres of land. There they resided for

the remainder of their lives, both are buried in Pioneer

cemetery. Henry Behrendt d Sept. 29, 1905, age 75 yrs.

Elizabeth d Jan. 18, 1916, age 88yrs. Henry Behrendt was a

tailor by trade , he had many customers and did excellent work.

They had seven children born in Musquodoboit in the house

occupied by Mrs. Ira Killen, widow 1980.
