John Bates
The Bates originally came from Holland and settled at Hammonds
Plains near Halifax. They came to Halifax after the American
Revolution (1775-1783).
Ehakim Bates married and had a family. He was buried in Halifax
in the cemetery by the old Dutch Church; his name can still be
read on his grave stone.
1. John V. Bates b 1792 –d Oct 27, 1870, son of Ehakim moved
from Hammonds Plains to Halifax as a young man, where he learned
the carpenter trade. About 1822 John moved to Musquodoboit, took
up part of the Mark Hodgson grant in Glenmore, cleared his farm
and built himself a home place where Mrs. Isaac Holman, a great
grand-daughter, now resides.
About the time he moved to Musquodoboit he md. Mary R. Layton
(dau. of John Layton). She was born in 1803 and died Sept. 16,
1881 age 78 yrs.

1. Henry Behrendt was born in Mecklenburg Strelitz,
Germany, which is on the Baltic Sea bordering on Hamburg and
Lubech. He was born in 1830. And died on Sept. 29, 1905, age 75
yrs. 9 mos.

When quite young he enlisted in the English army at the time of
the Crimean War, but just before arriving at the scene of action
Peace was declared. Not wishing to return to his native land he,
with several others, came to Halifax. In 1857 Henry met and
married Elizabeth Hollingsworth in Halifax. Elizabeth was the
daughter of John and Letitia Hollingsworth of Musquodoboit
South. They moved to Musquodoboit South on Oct. 6, 1857 where he
bought a house and a few acres of land. There they resided for
the remainder of their lives, both are buried in Pioneer
cemetery. Henry Behrendt d Sept. 29, 1905, age 75 yrs.
Elizabeth d Jan. 18, 1916, age 88yrs. Henry Behrendt was a
tailor by trade , he had many customers and did excellent work.
They had seven children born in Musquodoboit in the house
occupied by Mrs. Ira Killen, widow 1980.
