James Bruce, husbandman, of Musquodoboit was born in Scotland and
emigrated in 1812. In 1827 he had a wife and 12 children. In
1812 he petitioned for and obtained a warrent of survey for 500
acres back of Elderbank where he settled. It was called Bruce
Settlement. In 1827 he had 3 houses and two barns. Ref: Public
Archives, Halifax, N.S. In 1847-1848, John Bruce, Joseph Bruce,
George Bruce & William Bruce paid toward the salary of Rev.
Sidney Murkland, a Congregational Minister. In 1849, in ward 9

William came to Nova Scotia as a cabin boy when only 14 yrs.
old. Since he was very headstrong, he was sent to sea. The ship
was wrecked off the coast of Halifax so William remained in Nova

cabin on Butcher Hill. For a number of years he corresponded
with his parents then gradually lost contact.
