Mills in 1916. He died Sept. 5, 1953.

Ridge, France on Apr. 9,1917.

and held the rank of Major when discharged.

he enlisted in the 2nd World War. He was wounded and invalided

(grandson), later owned by Roy Archibald, buildings now gone,

1980. He and his brother James settled on adjoining farms, they

were the first settlers in this part of Glenmore.

of Reid Settlement). They are both buried in the Pioneer

cemetery here. (Susan b 1813-Aug. 28, 1882). They had 2 sons &

James Bruce


James Bruce, husbandman, of Musquodoboit was born in Scotland and

emigrated in 1812. In 1827 he had a wife and 12 children. In

1812 he petitioned for and obtained a warrent of survey for 500

acres back of Elderbank where he settled. It was called Bruce

Settlement. In 1827 he had 3 houses and two barns. Ref: Public

Archives, Halifax, N.S. In 1847-1848, John Bruce, Joseph Bruce,

George Bruce & William Bruce paid toward the salary of Rev.

Sidney Murkland, a Congregational Minister. In 1849, in ward 9

of the Presbyterian Church were James Bruce Sr., James Bruce Jr.

George Bruce and John Bruce. In 1860 in Church's map of Halifax

Co. which is in the Public Archives, Halifax the following are

listed: J. Bruce, G. Bruce, J. Bruce & W. Bruce.

from the Musquodoboit Lumber Co. Joseph H. Bruce d 1896 age 86

yrs. Mary A. d. 1875 age 55 yrs. They are both buried in the

Pioneer Cemetery. Joseph md. 2nd Mrs. Frances Gladwin, a widow.

Her maiden name was Eliza Muir. She is buried beside her first

husband in Hillside Cemetery.

Joseph and Mary had 2 sons, 7 daus.

William Butcher was baptized June 26, 1803 – a son of Phillip and

Hannah Butcher of Church Street, Deptford, England, a mariner.

This is a true copy from the Parish Church of St. Paul, Deptford,

Kent, England.

William came to Nova Scotia as a cabin boy when only 14 yrs.

old. Since he was very headstrong, he was sent to sea. The ship

was wrecked off the coast of Halifax so William remained in Nova

Scotia. He walked to Upper Musquodoboit where he erected a log

cabin on Butcher Hill. For a number of years he corresponded

with his parents then gradually lost contact.
