William Henry Cumminger
Cornelius Comegys (later spelled Cumminger) left Lexmont,
a town in Holland, and arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, about
1652. Apparently Cornelius was given large grants of land in
Maryland, because he settled there in 1661. All known Cummingers
in the United States and Canada are descendents of Cornelius.
One of his sons was called William, and this William had a
grandson, William Henry Cumminger, who arrived in Nova Scotia
1767 on the ship “Betsy” from Philadelphia. William Henry came
with his wife and five other families to settle on land grants
under the Philadelphia Company scheme, and disembarked at what is
now the town of Pictou. At the time they arrived, it was a
wilderness and this little group comprised the first white
settlers on Northumberland Strait.

Eleanor Fisher of the pioneer Fisher family in Truro and Upper
Musquodoboit. They both died young, leaving a family of 3 sons
and 3 daus. William Henry, the first son of Jesse and Eleanor
Cumminger, married Sarah McCurdy. They lived in Sherbrooke,
Guysborough County. The Cummingers who remained in Sherbrook
became prominent shipbuilders, chandlers and general merchants.
William Henry, son of William Henry and Sarah McCurdy
Cumminger, came to Middle Musquodoboit and married Ellen Jane
Archibald. They resided on the place owned by Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Dean, 1980, where William Henry established a tannery..
They had one daughter, Rhoda, who married Sidney Higgins, and
